EDUCATION

IN THE MALDIVES

Traditionally kids aged 3 and up were educated in Islamic classes. There were generally taught in 1 big room or under the shelter of a tree. They now
are also taught simple maths, the language used in the Maldives, Dhivehi, some Arabic and practiced reciting the Qur'an (Islamic religious text).
The first western style school was the Majeediyya School made by the president in 1927. It was originally co-ed but then they created a second school for girls called Aminiyya School in 1944.

The President of the Maldives is Mr Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The president in the Maldives gives each family about 15m by 30m of land were the people are able to build a house. The form of government in the Maldives is the presidential system.

There are three main types of food in the Maldives, coconuts, fish and starches. This is because the Maldives is in the middle of the Indian Ocean meaning they do not have a massive variety of food. One of the main dishes that is loved by almost all Maldivians is called 'Mas Huni'. It is a blend of tuna and coconut.

MALDIVIAN RELIGIONS

In the Maldives Islam is the main religion. They don't practice other religions and non-Muslims are not able to vote and become citizens.

LANGUAGE

DIVEHI

In the Maldives the national language is called Dhivehi. It is spoken by 340,000 people. It is also spoken in India (Minicoy Island).

IN THE MALDIVES

The government in the Maldives gives each family a piece of land measuring 15m by 30m where the family can build a house. Traditionally houses were built with large pieces of coral held up together. Now building blocks are made with cement and sand.

In Australia kids taught are taught from the age of 5 years old. They are taught English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History and some more additional subjects. Children in year 3, 5, 7 and 9 take a test called NAPLAN. It stands for National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy.

In Australia a well known style of eating/cooking food is from a BBQ. Lamb chops and sausages are the main food cooked on it. You would BBQ's at most homes in Australia and at some beaches. Another food eaten in Australia is fish, this is because Australia has the third largest fishing zone in the world. This is because of the fresh clean waters surrounding Australia. In most restaurants close to waters would have fish on the menu.

Take away is another common food for Aussies. Our country is one of the biggest consumer in the world. Main shops are Indian and Chinese restaurants but also a lot of American style fast food shops as well. Most fast food have hamburgers, fries/chips,fried chicken, kebabs and fish + chips. Classic Australian Foods
Some classic Aussie foods are;
- Vegemite - a salty food paste made with yeast extracts
- Anzac Biscuits - is a sweetish biscuit common in Australia and New Zealand made with rolled oats, flour, desiccated coconut, sugar, butter, golden syrup, baking soda and boiling water.
Violet Crumble - a chocolate bar with a honey comb middle and coated with chocolate.

AUSTRALIAN RELIGIONS

Australia's people are predominantly Christians, although most other religions are practised as well. Australians are free to have any religion, they don't have to be a religion if they don't want. The first kind of religious studies started back when only Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders were living in Australia. They have their own unique spiritual beliefs called The Dream Time.

LANGUAGE

AUSTRALIAN ENGLISH

In Australia the official language is Australian English. Although there are plenty of other common languages such as Mandarin, Italian, Arabic, Greek and Cantonese. The English language originated in North West Germany and the Netherlands. Settlers from these countries brought the English language to England when the settled in the UK.

In Australia there are a lot of apartments in capital cities that provide a lot of housing in a small space. Although lots of family prefer having houses which are bigger. Houses are made of bricks and cement.
