Main Characters

• Elie: A young Hungarian boy, the main character of this book, also the author.
• Elie's father: An old Hungarian man, constantly with Elie throughout their rapid switches from camp to camp.

EXPOSITION

• Where: Hungary and Poland.
• When: late 1930's through mid 1940's.
• During World War II

RISING ACTIONS

• Elie embraces his Jewish heritage and becomes a man of God, starts to study the Taro, the Jewish bible.
• Elie's town, Sighet, becomes a ghetto. A ghetto in this context is an isolated town or city which is patrolled by German soldiers. Sighet has been assigned German soldiers, one living right across the road from Elie.

CLIMAX
Elie arrives at his first concentration camp called Birkenau, a reception camp for Auschwitz. He is separated from his sisters and mother.

FALLING ACTIONS

• Elie loses faith in God and thinks that God is punishing him by having him suffer in the death camp. Elie refuses to celebrate any Jewish holidays.
• Elie and his father decide to evacuate camp Buna and escape from the Red Army.

RESOLUTION

• Elie escapes the clutches of the Nazis and leaves Birkenau for good, he ends up living a long life.

About the author

Elie Wiesel was born in the town of Sighet, Hungary, now located in Romania. Elie was but a teenager when he was forced to leave his home and was taken to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Elie recently died on July 2nd, 2016.
