BLIZZARD OF 1996

  • The blizzard of 1996 happened in Baltimore and Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania between January 6th - 10th.
  • This blizzard cost 4 billion dollars in damage and 384 lives were lost.

APPALACHIAN BLIZZARD

  • This storm occurred in New Hampshire in 1950. It is called the Appalachian blizzard because the storm was brought to New Hampshire from the Appalachian Mountains.
  • This storm caused 353 deaths and cost 66.7 million dollars in damages.
  • This storm left 1,000,000 people without power.

THE STORM OF THE CENTURY

  • This storm wreaked havoc from Cuba to Canada. This storm was formed on March 12 - March 15.
  • A total of 318 lives were lost and 10 million households lost power.
  • About 40 percent of all people in the country experienced the effects of this storm.

THE ICE STORM OF 1998

  • This ice storm happened in New England and Southeast Canada. It lasted through January 5th - 9th.
  • This ice storm cost 1.4 billion dollars in the US and 3 billion dollars in Canada.
  • 44 lives were lost because of this ice storm.

THE SOUTHERN ICE STORM

  • This storm occurred in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, North and South Carolina and Virginia.
  • This storm cost 3 billion dollars in damages and 35 people lost their lives.

JANUARY 2000 ICE STORM

  • This storm took place mainly in Atlanta. This storm happened at the worst time, right before super bowl XXXIV between the St. Louis Rams and Tennessee Titans.
  • North Georgia had to pay 48 million dollars in damages.
  • Since this storm, Atlanta has not hosted another super bowl since 2000.

TEXAS MESS

  • This storm lasted from Jan 22-24. This storm was the worst storm in North Texas in three decades.
  • 2,000 residents were treated for injuries from vehicle accidents, falls on ice and frostbite.
  • Almost 300,000 people living in Dallas County lost power for two days. Others lost power for up to 10 days.
  • This storm cost 14 million dollars in damage in Dallas County.

THE ARMISTICE BLIZZARD

  • A large pressure drop went off over the Midwest on November 11, 1940, as cold northern air collided with warm Gulf Coast moisture.
  • The blizzard chilled the air and winds built 20 foot snowdrifts.
  • A total of 145 deaths occurred because of this storm, including 25 duck hunters who were unprepared for this storm.

The Eastern Canadian Blizzard of 1971

  • This blizzard occurred in Quebec and Ontario, Canada.
  • The blizzard dropped a foot and a half of snow on Montreal and two feet elsewhere in the region.
  • This storm caused more than 20 fatalities and about $1 million in damages.

2002 ICE STORM

  • This storm occurred in North Carolina.
  • The storm caused the largest power outage in North Carolina history.
  • The storm produced $100 million in damages and 24 deaths.

CAUSES

  • A snow storm is an event in which precipitation is formed that occur at low temperatures, such as snow or sleet, or a rainstorm which causes ice to form on the ground. Most snow storms are usually caused by rising moist air within a cyclone. If the air near the surface is not cold enough, the snow will fall as rain. Most ice storms
  • A blizzard is a severe snowstorm with very high winds, cold weather and low visibility. For a blizzard to form, warm air must rise over cold air. When warm air and cold air are brought together, a front is formed and precipitation occurs. Most blizzards occur in north-east states and Canada.

HOW TO SURVIVE

  • To survive a blizzard, you need to try to be inside somewhere, such as a house or a car. You should always make sure you have an emergency kit available. Don't plan on traveling if there is a risk of a blizzard or ice storm.
  • To survive a ice storm, prepare your car, make sure you have a full gas tank, a kit with blankets, food and water, a tire pump, flares, flashlights and batteries and a first aid kit.
