DR. RICHARD GATLING

tAYLOR CLINE, 4TH PERIOD.

BIOGRAPHY

  • Born on September 12th 1818, in Hetford County, NC.
  • Married to jemima sanders, on October 25th, 1854. She was 19 years younger than him.
  • Was interested in medicine, & got an MD. He never put it to use, and instead focused on inventing.
  • He had smallpox as a child, which inspired him to get the MD.
  • Was elected president of the Americans association of inventors and manufacturing in 1891.

INVENTIONS

  • Most famous for the Gatling machine gun.
  • It was created in 1861, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
  • It was used during the war, and is still used today.
  • It only took him about a year to make and finalize.
  • He never failed, and it worked out pretty well.

THEN AND NOW

  • Falls under the manufacturing category.
  • There was a need for this invention, because of the war at the time.
  • It was very successful, with no failure whatsoever.
  • There has been minor improvements, but for the most part the model remained the same.
  • We still use things like this today, and it was the first of its kind.

MEET & GREET

  • If I met him, I would ask him what inspired/gave him the idea to make this gun, considering at the time there was nothing like it, & it was the first model of its time.
  • I believe he made it in that time due to the fact that a major war was going on, and the need for guns was great.
