What is ODD?

  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder
  • A type of severe behavioral disorder.
  • Defiant and hostile behavior towards authority figures.
  • A pattern of behavioral problems over time.
  • Interferes with a child's daily functioning and education.

Symptoms of ODD

  • Temper Tantrums
  • Defiance to authority figures
  • Overall Negativity
  • Hosility
  • Verbal Aggression
  • Questioning the rules

Symptoms cont.

  • Deliberately annoying (or upsetting) others
  • Mean and spiteful attitude
  • Hateful talking
  • Blaming Others
  • Overly sensitive or annoyed by others

Possible causes of odd

  • Biological Factors
  • Psychological Factors
  • Social Factors

ODD - don'ts

  • Argue
  • Threaten
  • Bribe
  • Confront or Put down
  • Remain in long interactions

ODD - Do's

  • Stay Calm & Establish Good Rapport
  • Listen before responding
  • Give simple, brief, clear directions
  • Clearly state the rules & consequences
  • Discuss behavior problems away from others
  • Give LOTS of quiet, positive praise for good behavior
