PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CRUSHED OR WHOLE?

DOES CRUSHING A TABLET INCREASE OR DECREASE THE SOLUTION

QUESTION

  • We tested whether crushing a tablet increases or decreases the solution rate

HYPOTHESIS

  • Our hypothesis is that by crushing the tablet before adding to the water, the solution rate will increase.

VARIABLES

  • Independent Variable: whether the tablet is crushed or whole
  • Dependent Variable: how fast it takes to dissolve the tablet
  • Controlled Variables: beaker, amount of water, temperature of water

MATERIALS

  • Water
  • Beaker
  • Tablets
  • Baggie
  • Timer

PROCEDURE

  • Step 1: Fill the beaker with 500 mL of water
  • Step 2: Put the tablet in the baggie
  • Step 3: Start crushing the tablet
  • Step 4: Put the crushed tablet in the beaker
  • Step 5: Time the process
  • Step 6: Repeat 1-5 not crushing the tablet

Untitled Slide

  • We did the procedure three times, and these were the results:

WHOLE

  • Trial One: 40 seconds
  • Trial Two: 28 seconds
  • Trial Three: 22 seconds

CRUSHED

  • Trial 1: 26 seconds
  • Trial 2: 27 seconds
  • Trial 3: 19 seconds

AVERAGES

  • Crushed: 24 seconds
  • Whole: 30 seconds

ACCEPT OR REJECT?

  • We accept out hypothesis because we were correct, crushing the tablets before putting them in the water does increase the solution rate.

CONCLUSION

  • The conclusion we came to was that crushing the tablets does make them dissolve faster. We came to to this conclusion because in all three of our trials, the crushed tablet dissolved faster.
