New Caledonia was the world's fifth largest producer of iron after Russia (266,000), Indonesia (189,000), Canada (181,000) and Australia (167,000).

The word "Caledonian" is used by the French and others who have settled in the islands. The term "Kanak" is used to designate native residents of this South Pacific archipelago and their culture.

  • 1.)Located in Oceania in the Melanesia region, New Caledonia is about 1,210 km or 750 miles east of Australia, with Vanuatu in the north. 2.)The largest city and capital is Noumea with about 100,000 people, followed by Mont Dore, Dumbea, Paita, We, Tadine, Poindimie, Bourail, Kone, and Houailou. 3.)The mainland includes a central mountain range with Mont Panie being the highest peak at 1,629 metres or 5,344 feet. The eastern side of the mountain range is more vegetation, the western coast is more plains and agriculture areas. 4.)The languages used are French, English, Drehu, Nengone, Paici, Ajie, Xaracuu, and more than 30 other local languages. 5.) Is home to the New Caledonian crow, known for making tools as much or more than primates.
