HEREFORD CATTLE

BACKGROUND

  • Created two and a half centuries ago in the County of Herefordshire, England
  • Bred to produce large quantities of beef for the expanding market created by Britain's Industrial Revolution
  • The first Herefords recorded in the US where shipped over in 1817 and attracted a good amount of attention
  • When the Civil War ended and the American Industrial Revolution began, the desire for Hereford bulls boomed

CHARACTERISTICS

  • The modern Hereford is coloured dark red to red-yellow, with a white face, crest, dewlap, and underline.
  • Mature males generally weigh around 1,800 lbs while females weigh around 1,200 lbs.
