In the year 622, Muhammed and his followers went to Yathrib. They renamed the city Medina because it means "City of the Prophet".'This 200 mile trip north was called the Hijrah. This event was important to Muslims because Medina was where Muhammed led others to convert to being Muslim. This led the Muslim population to grow. The Islamic Lunar Calendar was also created in the year 622.
