ISSUES IN HEALTH CARE

  • 10% Australian infants parents' perceived that early childcare services for their children is unmet.(Ou,L., et.al., 2010).
  • Barriers: cost, transport, child care difficulties, service availability and family reasons
  • In Australia, despite of government support for preventive health care, uptake is low.(Alexander, K., et.al., 2013).
  • Access is determined by parents' cultural health beliefs, personal health practices, costs and relationship with health providers

  • Newly arrived refugee children in Australia have limited access to health care (Davidson, N., et.al., 2004)
  • Reasons: cultural, language and financial constraints, lack of awareness of available services and lack of understanding of the health providers of the complexity of their needs
  • Communication issues remains the most notable barrier
  • Interpreters for children = risk of miscommunication or misdiagnosis
