Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

  • Replaces NCLB! 1st piece of federal legislation in 50+ years provides justification for funding library programs.
  • 8K public schools in the U.S. do not have a school library.
  • Of schools with school libraries: nearly 17,000 schools do not have a full or part-time state-certified librarian on staff.

  • Gives flexibility for spending funds for school library programs.
  • Importance of school libraries finally being recognized in the educational arena.
  • Bill passage means greatly increased chance for staffing each school with a certified LMS.

Teen Trends

The Good:

  • Bullying among kids aged 12-18 dropped to 22% in 2013 (down from 32% in 2005).
  • The high school smoking rate is 15.7% (lowest recorded since surveys started in 1991).
  • National teen pregnancy rates are at a record low.
  • Heroin use is at an all time low.
  • Synthetic marijuana use is down.

The Bad:

  • 41% of teens text and drive.
  • eCigarette use tripled among middle and high schoolers in the past year.
  • 18% of teens use prescription drugs without a prescription.
  • For the first time ever, marijuana use exceeds tobacco use among teens.

  • Whites - 77%

  • 24% of teens online "almost constantly"
  • More than 3/4 of teens have access to a smartphone
  • Most likely group to have a smartphone? African-American students

Social Media

  • Facebook is still #1 with 71 % of teens
  • Next up are Instagram (52%) and Snapchat (41%)
  • Boys visit Facebook more often than girls
  • Girls are likely to visit Instagram more often

Visual Media Platforms

  • Girls use all visually-oriented social media in greater numbers than boys: Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest & Tumblr

  • Girls outpace boys in text messaging, and visual social media platforms
  • Boys outnumber girls in console ownership and video game playing

Desktops/Laptops/Tablets

  • 87% of teens have access to a desktop or laptop computer
  • 58% of teens have access to a tablet computer
  • White teens are most likely to have a desktop or laptop computer
  • Among low-income teens ( less than 50K), 8 out of 10 have either a desktop or laptop

How much time online?

  • 92% of teens go online daily
  • 56% are online several times a day
  • Only 12% reported just one-a-day use

Race/Socioeconomic Trends

  • African-American and Hispanic teens go online with greater frequency
  • Teens from well-to-do families (more than 75K) go online more frequently than teens from homes earning less than 50K

Texting

  • 33% of teens use messaging apps like Kik or WhatApp - of those teens, 46% are Hispanic and 47% are African-American

Typical Teens

  • Send and receive 30 texts a day
  • Older teen girls (15-17) send and receive 50 messages a day
  • The most messages are sent daily from teens within the lower socioeconomic group (less than 30K)

Anonymous Apps

  • Whisper, Yik Yak, AskFM
  • Only 11% of all teens using apps like this
  • Girls are slightly more likely to use than boys; Hispanic teens are nearly twice as likely as white teens to use these apps

Digital Natives?

  • 19% of students aged 12-15 believe information retrieved by Google or Bing must be true.
  • Students are turning to YouTube for "true and accurate information" about current events.
  • Only half of all student using YouTube for this purpose understand that advertising is the main source of funding for YouTube!
