NEWARK CASTLE

HISTORY

  • Originally a fortified Saxon manor
  • Alexander, bishop of Lincoln, founded the castle in the mid 12th century
  • Built on the River Trent
  • Originally a timber castle
  • Rebuilt in stone near the end of the century
  • Dismantled after the English Civil War
  • Restored partially by Anthony Salvin in 1840
  • Then by the corporation of Newark in 1889

Interesting fact:
King John died in the castle after consuming the infamous 'surfeit of peaches'.

THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR

  • The town was a cornerstone of the royalist cause
  • Attacked in February 1643.
  • Attacked again near the end of 1644 by forces of Nottingham, Lincoln and Derby.
  • Parliament started a new siege in January 1645 followed by more raiding.

THE CIVIL WAR CONT.

  • Final siege began November 1645 and ended May 1646 when the town was ordered to surrender.
  • After the war defences were destroyed, including the castle which remains in the same condition today.
