PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Darry was in the story as a protector and a challenge. In the story, Darry is the brain and the strong man, as well as the provider. At the age of 20, he provides for his two brothers. He serves as a challenge to Ponyboy to see if he could finally connect with his big brother. No matter how Ponyboy looks at the situation, he just can’t see how much Darry loves him. Pony shouldn’t judge his brother by what he looks like, because on the inside Darry is passionate and loving, but on the outside, he is tough and cold. No one should be judged solely on their appearance, as it hides their true self. Darrys story also conveys the strong idea that family is very important and that the three brothers were all that each other had, therefore they needed to stick together.
“…but Darry’s eyes are his own. He’s got eyes that are like two pieces of pale blue-green ice. They’ve got a determined set to them, like the rest of him.” Darry’s eyes describe him perfectly. Darry is not the kind to joke around; instead he works to support his family. He is strong and not one to speak his feelings. He’s tough and hard, just like ice.
This quote about Darry’s eyes helps us know how Ponyboy feels about Darry. He describes Darry’s eyes as “pale blue-green ice”. This shows that Pony is not very comfortable with Darry. He says “pale” because he feels like he only knows the first impression of Darry’s personality. He uses the word “ice” because he feels like Darry is tough and hard. Not wanting to share his feelings or personality.

I felt like Darry when my cat went missing. In the book, Pony runs away because he was mad at Darry. Darry was devastated by this, because he felt like it was his job to take care of Pony, let alone the fact that Pony was his brother.
When my cat ran away, I was worried about her. I didn’t know if she was dead, stuck somewhere or even if she had been catnapped. I can relate to how Darry felt even if my experience was not as significant as losing a sibling.
