EARLY LIFE 👶🏾

  • Thurgood Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1908 and died in Bethesda, Maryland in 1993.
  • Thurgood Marshall's dad (William) favorite hobby was to listen to cases at the local courthouse before returning home to talk about the lawyers' arguments with his sons.
  • After Thurgood Marshall graduated from high school he wanted to attend University of Maryland, School of law, but was turned away due to there segregation policy, and went to Howard University in DC.

TIMELINE

BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION 📝⚖

  • Brown v. Board of Education were five separate cases.
  • main issue in each of the 5 cases was the state-sponsored segregation in public schools. Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund handled these cases.
  • Thurgood Marshall personally argued the case before the Court.
  • Chief Justice Warren, got all the justices to agree to support a unanimous decision declaring segregation in public schools unconstitutional.

COURT OF APPEALS✒️👔

  • In 1961, President John F. Kennedy appointed Thurgood Marshall as a judge for the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals.
  • Thurgood Marshall served as a circuit court judge over the next four years.
  • Thurgood Marshall wrote over 150 decisions.

SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES 🇺🇸🏛

  • President Johnson nominated Marshall to serve on the Supreme Court.
  • On October 2, 1967, Marshall was sworn in as a Supreme Court justice, becoming the first African American to serve on the nation's highest court.
  • As a Supreme Court justice, Marshall supported rulings upholding individual rights

  • Thurgood Marshall has character traits of being Diligent and Brave
  • Marshall is Diligent because he is showing care in his duties for African Americans and human rights.
  • Marshall is also Brave because he endured and faced a lot of discrimination without showing fear.

CONCLUSION

  • Thurgood Marshall famously said "In recognizing the humanity of our fellow beings, we pay ourselves the highest tribute".
