KNIGHTS AND CHIVALRY

  • Chivalry was a moral system that stated all knights should protect others who can not protect themselves.
  • You became a knight by being born into a rich family or a family that was well integrated at court.
  • The king could also gift you knighthood if you provided some exceptional service.
  • All knights needed to have the strength and skills to fight wars in the Middle Ages.
  • They not only had to be strong but they were also extremely disciplined.

ATTITUDE OF A KNIGHT

  • Knights vowed to be loyal, generous, courageous, gallant, and loyal.
  • Knights were required to tell the truth.
  • They respected women, they also feared god and maintained his church.
  • Knights vowed to guard the honor of all fellow knights.
  • Knights always kept their faith and never turned their back on a foe.

TOURNAMENTS

  • The first tournaments were mock battles that were for military training.
  • Jousting was a way for knights to dispute their ranks.
  • These early battles were called duels of chivalry, not tournaments.
  • In jousting a knight won by hitting his opponent's shield or helmet.
  • Jousting reached its height as a medieval spectator sport in the 13th century.

BECOMING A KNIGHT

  • At the age 15 or 16 a boy became a squire.
  • He had to dress the knight in the mornings and take care of his horse.
  • He followed his knight to the battle field and assisted him at tournaments.
  • After proving himself worthy a lord would crown the squire a knight .
  • There would be a long ceremony and pledge to his lord.
