• Example: air, water, land
• Divided into different biomes
• Covers most of the planet

HABITAT

FACTS

• Example: Ocean, Forest, Wetland
• A habitat is occupied by many different species

COMMENSALISM

FACTS

• Definition: Relationship where one organism benefits and the other organism is neither harmed or benefits
• Sometimes the other organism can be harmed but in these cases it is hard to tell

MIMICRY

FACTS

• Definition: superficial resemblance of two or more species; a mechanism that avoids predation by appearing to be noxious
• There are two forms of mimicry: batesian and mullerian

SYMBIOSIS

FACTS

• Definition: relationship that occurs when two different species live together in a unique way
• Example: Bacteria in intestines of humans is a symbiotic relationship
• 3 types of symbiosis: commensalism, parasitism, mutualism

AUTOTROPH

FACTS

• Definition: organism that can capture energy and synthesize organic molecules from inorganic nutrients
• Opposite of heterotroph basically any plant

BIOMASS

FACTS

• Definition: the number of organisms multiplied by their weight
• Basically anything that is alive or was alive a short while ago

FOOD CHAIN

FACTS

• Definition: the order in which one population feeds on another in an ecosystem, from detritus or producer to final consumer
• Shows relationship between different organisms

FACTS

• Definition: complex pattern of energy flow in an ecosystem represented by interlocking and crisscrossing food chains
• All organisms are related to each other through their dependence on other organisms for food

HETEROTROPH

FACTS

• Definition: organism that cannot synthesize organic molecules from inorganic nutrients and therefor must take in organic nutrients
• A plant is the opposite of a heterotroph being an autotroph
