HISTORY
1500s: Giovanni Fillipo was the first case
1600s: Richard Morton believed it was a milder form of smallpox
1700s: William Heberden proves it is different from smallpox

SYMPTOMS
Appear within 10-21 days after infection
Itchy rash
Fluid filled blisters

3 STAGES OF THE RASH
Pink or red bumps called Papules breakout
They turn into small fluid filled blisters called vesicles
Crusts and scabs form covering the blisters

TREATMENT
Antibiotics should help clear the rash within 5-10 days

PREVENTION
Stay away from infected people
Get the chickenpox vaccine

WHO IS MORE SUSCEPTIBLE
Young kids not vaccinated
Adults who’ve never had it
People with immune system problems

THE VACCINE
It is completely effective in 98% of cases
In other cases, it significantly decreases the effect of chickenpox

COMPLICATIONS
Severe cases include: inflammation of the brain, pneumonia, dehydration

RISKS
Chickenpox is very contagious
Chance that you can get shingles later on in life
