Clearance Thomas was appointed by George H.W. Bush on October 23,1991

BACKGROUND AND GENERAL EDUCATION

  • He was born on June 23, 1948 in Pin Point Georgia
  • He attended Yale law school
  • He later served in various post under Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush
  • He attended St.John Vianney minor seminary and graduated there
  • He is married to Virginia Lamp

LEGAL TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Thomas went to Holy Cross College where he studied English
  • After college he attended Yale Law school where his views started to become more conservative
  • Thomas returned to the south to work as an assistant to Missouri attorney General Danforth after earning his degree
  • After several years as a lawyer he moved to Washington D.C. where eventually he received several appointments from President Ronald Reagan
  • Later in 1991 George W Bush gave Thomas his first and only judgeship, nominating him to the U.S. circuit courts of Appeals

CONSERVATIVE OR LIBERAL?

  • Thomas is considered a conservative justice, he has often opposed affirmative action, and tends to vote with other conservative justices
  • He is generally viewed as the most conservative member of the court

CRIMINAL CASES

  • On June 26,2017 was the Davila v. Davis case
  • This case was unfavorable to the petitioner
  • It stated "Held: The ineffective assistance of post conviction counsel does not provide cause to excuse the procedural default of ineffective-assistance-of-appallate-counsel claims"
  • This case was about Erick Daniel Davila who was found guilty of capital murder
  • He killed Annette Stevenson and her granddaughter Queshawn Stevenson

CRIMINAL CASES

  • On June 23,2017 was the Lee v. United States case
  • This case was favorable to the petitioner
  • This was a criminal procedure. It was a case about a guy named Lee who lived in America for 35 years illegally. This case took place in the Tennessee Western U.S. District Court. The decision direction was liberal (6-2)
