Common Illnesses

Definition:

An unhealthy condition of the body caused by germs. 

Cold

  • A disease of the upper respiratory track caused by inflammation of the mucus membranes in the nose, throat, and eyes.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Sneezing
  • Cough
  • Congestion
  • Slight body aches
  • Low-grade fever
  • Malaise

Primary Groups Affected

  • Children under the age of six are more likely to catch a cold. This is due to the fact that their immune systems are not mature yet.
  • Children at this age are more likely to not wash their hands regularly and to cover their mouths when they cough.

Teachers Role

  • Knowing the signs and symptoms of a common cold is important for teachers because it can help prevent further spread of the illness in the classroom.
  • Teachers can teach their students to wash their hands frequently, and how to cough into their elbow.

Diarrhea

A condition where the bowels are frequent and loose.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Loose watery stools
  • Adominal pain
  • Adominal cramps
  • Fever
  • Blood in stool
  • Bloating
  • Nausea

Primary Groups Affected

  • Diarrhea affects young children and infants due to dehydration or food poisioning.
  • This can also affect adults as well. The causes primarliy are due to food poisioning and medical conditions such as IBS.

Teachers Role

  • A teachers role is to make sure the children are washing their hands after using the bathroom.
  • Teachers also need to be know when a child should be sent home due to symptoms of diarrhea to prevent further spread of the illness.

Nosebleed

  • When there is blood coming out of the nose.

Types of Nosebleeds

  • Anterior which is blood coming from the front of the nose.
  • Posterior which is comes from deeper inside the nose. Usually caused by an injury.

Causes

  • Dry/cold air
  • Foreign object in nose
  • Allergic reaction
  • Picking your nose
  • Injury to the nose
  • High blood pressure
  • Upper respitory infection

Primary Groups Affected

  • Common in adults and children ages 3-10.

Teachers Role

  • A teachers role is to provide first aid care to help to stop the nose from bleeding.
  • Teachers also need to know the signs, symptoms, and causes of nose bleeds to adminster care.

Pink Eye

  • An inflammation of the clear covering of the eye.
  • Also know as conjunctivitus.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Redness on the whites of the eye.
  • Green, yellow, greyish discharge from eye
  • Watery eyes.

Types of Pink Eye

  • Viral conjunctivitis.
  • Bacterial Conjunctivitis.
  • Allergic Conjunctivitis.

  • Food Poisoning
  • Motion sickness
  • Headaches

  • Adults/teens who drink alcohol.
  • Infants

Teachers Role

  • A teachers role is to know the signs and symptoms of vomiting.
  • A teacher also needs to know the difference between spit up and throw up.
  • Teachers also need to make sure the children are washing their hands frequently to prevent spread of the illness.
