BEGINNING
The North and South were battling in the Civil War in 1861.
After the Emancipation Proclamation that freed slaves in January 1863, the African Americans joined the Army.

BEGINNING
The seargent was William H. Carney.
One of the drummer boys was Ned whom escaped from slavery.
Both Carney and Ned were in the Union.

MIDDLE
They went into war.
Ned filled canteens.
Carney got shot at and fell to his knees.
He got shot at again and as the flag was falling he caught it and got slammed with two more bullets.

END
They were walking back and Carney collapsed saying "The old flag never touched the ground".
After the war was over, Carney had earned the Congressional Medal of Honor.
