BEGINNING

  • The North and South were battling in the Civil War in 1861.
  • After the Emancipation Proclamation that freed slaves in January 1863, the African Americans joined the Army.

BEGINNING

  • The seargent was William H. Carney.
  • One of the drummer boys was Ned whom escaped from slavery.
  • Both Carney and Ned were in the Union.

MIDDLE

  • They went into war.
  • Ned filled canteens.
  • Carney got shot at and fell to his knees.
  • He got shot at again and as the flag was falling he caught it and got slammed with two more bullets.

END

  • They were walking back and Carney collapsed saying "The old flag never touched the ground".
  • After the war was over, Carney had earned the Congressional Medal of Honor.
