THE MUSES

  • Original three are Melete (practice or attention), Aoede (song), and Mneme (memory)
  • Their number increased to nine later on
  • Calliope (beautiful voice)and later the mother of Orpheus, Cleio (celebrate), Melpomene (singers and dancers), Euterpe (happy delight), Erato (lovely), Terpsichore (enjoyment and dancing), Urania (heavenly), Thaleia (good cheer), Polyhymnia (many songs)
  • Each had their own category but wouldn't necessarily stick to their defined role
