etymology=the study of word origins and how words change over time

The root is the "core" or "heart" of the word. (The root "cor/cour" actually means "heart," as in--courage, cordial, etc.)

Root word=
the basic element of a word (and a word all by itself). You can add prefixes and or suffixes to a root word to make new ones!

affix: a letter or group of letters added to a word (at the beginning, middle or end) that changes its meaning

prefix = an affix that is attached to the beginning of a word, changing its meaning.
