FOSSILS FOUND IN ANTARCTICA

WHAT WER THE FIRST FOSSILS FOUND IN ANTARCTICA? WHEN AND WHERE WERE THEY FOUND?

  • A research team at work on James Ross Island near the Antarctic peninsula

WHAT WAS THE FIRST DINOSAUR FOSSIL FOUND IN ANTARCTICA? WHERE AND WHEN WAS IT FOUND?

  • The first fossil was a duck beaked dinosaur. Was from Cretaceous period about 1-2 million years ago .

WHAT DINOSAUR FOSSIL WAS FOUND VEGA ISLAND IN 1986?

  • Carnosauruses were up to 8-9 meters long and had a skeleton shaped body. And lived more than 185 years ago.

What are the two reasons the fossil found on Vega Island is of particular importance to understanding the climate and location of Antarctica millions of years ago?

  • That it was hotter than it is now and it dried up a lot of other seas to make new life

THE FIRST DINOSAUR FOSSIL AND THE FOSSIL FOUND ON VEGA ISLAND FOUND IN 1986 WERE REPRESENTATIVE OF WHAT GEOLOGIC TIME PERIOD?

  • The carnosauruses were found in the Cambrian period roughly 500 million years ago.

WHAT DINOSAUR FOSSIL WAS FOUND IN TRANSANTARCTIC MOUNTAINS IN THE SUMMER OF 1990-1991? DURING WHAT GEOLOGICAL TIME PERIOD DID THE DINOSAUR LIVE?

  • The cryolophosaurus and also from the early Jurassic period.

BESIDES THE FOSSILS ALREADY DISCUSSED NAME THE OTHER FOSSIL ANIMALS THAT HAVE BEEN FOUND IN ANTARCTICA?

  • The hadrosaurs was a duck billed dinosaur. It was about 20 feet tall.

WHY HAVE SO FEW DINOSAUR FOSSILS BEEN FOU D IN ANTARCTICA?

  • Is because everything is covered in ice making it hard for archeologists to excavate.

EARLY EXPEDITIONS TO ANTARCTICA REPORTED ON SEEING FOSSILS BUT THEY DID NOT COLLECT THEM. WHO FIRST REPORTED SEEING FOSSILS OF LEAVES AND SYEMS OF PLANTS? WHO REPORTED FINDING BEDS OF COAL NEAR THE SOUTH POLE?

  • Robert A Sutton lead an early expedition and reported first sightings of fossils of plant stems and leaves.

HOW DO PLANT FOSSIL BEDS OF COAL SUPPORT THE IDEA THAT ANTARCTICA ONCE WAS WARMER THAN IT IS TODAY?

  • Because plants need to sun and warm temperatures to survive
