QUESTION

Will rubbing alcohol increase a rose's life?

HYPOTHESIS

  • If rubbing alcohol is put into a rose's vase, then the rose will last longer because the chemicals in the alcohol with eliminate any harmful bacteria.

MATERIALS

  • 4 identical roses
  • Two identical vases or pots
  • A planner
  • A camera
  • An iPad to create a detailed report
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Pencil
  • Water

PROCEDURE PART 1

  • Acquire 4 identical roses
  • Obtain 2 identical vases labeled "experimental" and "control" and pour 3/4 of a liter in each of them
  • Put two roses in each of the vases
  • Pour 1 teaspoon of rubbing alcohol in the vase labeled "experimental" and pour 1 teaspoon of water in the vase labeled "control"
  • Place both jars on the same table with the same amount of sunlight
  • Repeat step 5 every other day until data collection period has ended

PROCEDURE PART 2

  • Take a camera and take a picture of the flowers
  • Repeat step 1 every day at 7:00 AM and at 7:00 PM
  • Devise a set of specific observations such as: leaf texture, petal texture, water color, stem color, number of petals wilted, number of leaves fallen off, etc.
  • At 7:00 PM, use your pictures to create a set of detailed observations
  • Create a detailed report using your data

DATA DAYS

Each slide is one day of the observation

DAY 1

  • Quantitative Data: 0 for both groups
  • Qualitative Data: Both groups are fresh out of the market, no deterioration just yet

DAY 2

  • Quantitative Data: 0 for both groups
  • Qualitative Data: Control group is very slightly drooping, Experimental is as fresh as yesterday
