BACKGROUND
born March 19, 1813, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Scottish explorer and missionary
Famous explorer of Africa

FIRST EXPLORATION
Had chance to go to China as a missionary
Failed because of the First Opium war broke out in Sep 1839
Six months later, met a veteran missionary, Robert Moffat
Enchanted him with a tale "the smoke of a thousand villages where no missionary had been before"

Then he got really interested and curious
Set sail For South Africa, in Nov, 1840
Arrived in March, 1841, Cape Town, South Africa

15 years on exploration of South Africa
Attacked by the natives, wild animals
Crew numbers went down day by day
He didn't give up, still wanted to explore the "the smoke of a thousand villages where no missionary had been"
Finally, his hard work got paid off, made friends in the interior of South Africa.

SOMETHING INTERESTING
In 1855, David Livingstone was the first European who to see the Mosi-oa-Tunya waterfall
He renamed the waterfall, which now is called the Victoria Fall.
David Livingstone married the daughter of Robert Moffat.

EXPLORATION OF NILE
From 1858 to 1864, David Livingstone led the Zambezi Expedition
It was a failure
The Zambezi River proved impassable and Livingstone’s leadership qualities were called into question

In 1866, he set sail again
To explore the source of Nile River
he became the first European to see Lake Bangweulu and Lake Ngami.

During the exploration, he had completely lost contact to the outside world
Had nothing, alone, severely ill
But he didn't give up, continued his exploration

New York Herald newspaper sent H.M.Stanley to find Livingstone.
When he found him, started greeting with the now famous quote,"Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"
Stanley tried to convince him to go back, but Livingstone resisted to stay.

Stanley left by himself after staying with Livingstone 5 months
Meanwhile, Livingstone lost again......
He died on 1st May, 1873, because of malaria

Obsessed with his own experiment/exploration
Didn't think about himself/other, what consequences would bring to himself/other
David Livingstone was a hero, but Frankenstein was just a scientist.
