Who is Malala Yousafzai?

Malala was born in 1997 in Pakistan. She loved learning and going to school . Both her and her father were advocates for education.

In 2009, Malala began writing a blog for the BBC, anonymously. She was later featured in a documentary where her identity as author of the BBC blog was revealed.

In 2012, a Taliban member boarded her school bus, asked for Malala by name and shot her in the head. The bullet traveled through her head, neck and shoulder.

Malala survived the attack and became a global advocate for girls' education.

What has Malala done since?

  • motivated 2 million people to sign a right to education petition, leading to the ratification od Pakistan's first Right to Free and Compulsory Education Bill
  • established the Malala Fund (2013)
  • won a Nobel Peace Prize (2014) and used her winnings to fund a school for girls in Pakistan
