Alex’s mother was a basketball star who won Olympic gold medals with the Soviet Union in 1976 and 1980. His father was a pro soccer player. Alex's older brother Sergei, who would become a champion wrestler, introduced him to hockey when he was two. The Ovechkins had a third boy, Mikhail, named after his dad.

Alex was the youngest player in the 2004 World Cup.
Alex played for Team Russia at the 2006 Olympics. He scored five goals in eight games. Alex was the only player named to the Olympic All-Tournament Team whose country did not win a medal. Russia finished fourth.
Alex was the first rookie since Teemua Selanne to be named a First-Team NHL All-Star.

He never went to high school he was drafted in 2004 at 18yrs old and had a private tourer

was the number one draft pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. In his first NHL season (2004-05), Ovechkin won the Calder Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year. The following NHL season (2006-07), Alexander scored a league leading 65 goals (to earn the Rocket Richard Trophy) and racked up a league leading 112 points (earning him the Art Ross Trophy). That same season he was also honored with the Lester B. Pearson Award

Ovechkin has the biggest playing contract in the sport worth $124 million over 13 years. Ovi counts Nike, Gatorade and Bauer as global partners and will be a highly sought after endorser, as the Winter Olympics return to his native Russia in 2014.
