Brazil was a colony of Portugal. It gained its independencer from Portugal in 1822. It was runned by a monarch government until the end of slavery in 1888.

Brazil is runned by a Republic Government as of right now. Brazil’s national anthem is, “Hino Nacional Brasileiro”. Brazil’s government is based on representative democracy. The government has 3 branches: Legislative, judicial, executive. The country’s president is Dilma Rousseff and is also the Chief of State.

Brazil is home to 201,009,622 people, making it Number 6 in the world for most people. Brazil doesn't have a high population growth rate.

Brazil’s economy outweighs all South American countries, and Brazil is expanding its presence in world markets. Brazil is a developing country, because it has a low standard of living and an undeveloped base of industry. Most of Brazil’s people are still in poverty.

The language spoken in Brazil is Portuguese. Portuguese is spoken in Portugal, Angola, and Mozambique. The religions are 64.5% Roman Catholic, 22.2% Protestantism, 8% No Religion, and 2% Spiritism. Protestantism took over Brazil through 1940-2010.

Brazil is also well known for Carnival. Its a Brazilian holiday held 46 days before Easter. It comes from Lent, which is a Christian observance. The holiday usually is celebrated with parades, street parties, and circus that lasts day and night.

The Brazilian cuisine varies by religion. The country’s national dish is the Feijoada since their colonial times.

Another popular dish is the Brigadeiros. It can compare to a hersheys kiss, and is very popular at parties.
