WHO WERE THE GOTHS?

  • A nomadic germanic tribe
  • Sacked Rome in 410
  • They traveled around for a bit until settling in spain
  • When settled in spain they established the Kingdom of Visigoths
  • Until 507 their rule came to an end by the Franks under Clovis I

After the Battle of Vouillé the goths were limited to Hispania.
Under Reccared I the goths converted from Arianism to Nicene Christianity gradually adopting the culture of their Hispano-Roman

During 654 they created a legal code; Liber Ludiciorum, abolishing the longstanding practice of applying different laws for Romans and Visigoths.

In 711-712, a force of invading Arabs and Berbers defeated the Visigoths in the Battle of Guadalete.

Although many nobles died (including the king), the goths lived on in Marca Hispanica and in the kingdom of Asturias, which was founded by Pelagius.
