Time, Weight, and Format

  • Duration: 2 hrs HL
  • Weight: 25% of your course grade
  • A comparative analysis on two previously unseen texts

Course Part/Exam Format

  • Corresponds most strongly to Part 1 and Part 2 of the Language and Literature course.
  • Response will most likely be to two non literary texts, though it is possible that one text will be of a literary nature.

  • When you sit down, you will receive...

Untitled Slide

  • Two PAIRS of texts that are related thematically in some way.
  • As stated before, at least one of these texts will be nonliterary.

Instructions

  • Choose ONE pair to respond to.
  • Read through both texts in the pair.
  • Take notes on ALL forms of similarities and differences between them.
  • Construct an essay that compares and contrasts both texts.

  • extract from an essay/novel/memoir

Audience and Purpose

  • Who is this targeted to?
  • What kind of text is it?
  • Why was it produced?

Content and Theme

  • What is the text about?
  • What are the main ideas the author conveys?

Tone and Mood

  • Serious? Angry? Encouraging? Informative? Satirical?
  • Is the atmosphere bleak? relaxed? mysterious? etc.

Style and Structure

  • Do you see a stance or a bias?
  • How are you, the reader, engaged/hooked?
  • Is there use of humor?
  • What tone is created? How do you know?
  • How is it developed or organized? What about sentence structure?
  • What signifies weight and importance?

  • Criterion A: Understanding and comparison of the texts
  • Criterion B: Understanding the use and effects of stylistic features
  • Criterion C: Organization and Development
  • Criterion D: Language
