In 1543, three Portuguese travelers became the first Europeans to visit Japan when they drifted ashore at a small island near Kyushu.
A couple years later, more and more portuguese merchants, traders and Jesuit missionaries who came to introduce Christianity arrived in Japan.
The Japanese called them nanban, meaning southern barbarians.
The Portuguese influenced Japanese cartography
- There were importation of maps and globes by the Portuguese into Japan
- They were also the importation of Portuguese cartographical material into Japan
They also gave influence on the art of Old Japan, called Namban-byobu( Southern Barbarians screens').
