STARBUCKS ARREST IN PHILADELPHIA

DATED 4\17\18; SOURCE NYT; BY JAKE GALANTOWICZ

My Article: Philadelphia Starbucks Arrests, Outrageous to some, Are Everyday Life for Others
Source: New York Times Date: 4/17/18

This article is about a bad incident that has happened at a Starbucks in Philadelphia. Two black men went into the Starbucks to wait for their white friend. Before they were going to go to the bathroom, an employee went up to them and said, “You can’t use my restroom or sit down unless you order something first.” They said that they were waiting for their friend and needed to go to the bathroom, so the employee called the police, and this is what he said, “I have two gentlemen in my cafe that are refusing to make a purchase or leave. I am at the Starbucks at 18th and Spruce.” Then, three policemen in bicycle helmets came to the Starbucks to arrest them. When the white friend arrived, he told the police that they were discriminating against the two black men, and said, “We’ll just go somewhere else.” Unfortunately, the police said, “they are not free to leave.”

WHY IS THIS NEWSWORTHY?

  • Police were being racist towards blacks
  • Chief Executive of Starbucks, Kevin Johnson, is closing down stores for anti-racial bias lessons

HOW DOES THIS EFFECT OUR WORLD?

  • Some people disobey the civil rights law (outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, or national origin)
  • Racism conflicts with freedom

WHY DID I CHOOSE THIS ARTICLE?

  • I think the way the blacks are treated is unfair
  • Want to spread awareness and stop racism
  • It’s a very big event and I want people to know about it
  • I like learning about what is going on in the world and how I can help.
  • We have the right to protest and speak, so we should use it in a good way

LENS TIME

YAY! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I CHOSE THE CULTURAL LENSE BECAUSE...

  • The police discriminated against the black people only because of their race/culture
  • The police mishandled their authority (they used their power incorrectly) because they didn’t protect the black’s rights

In conclusion, I’m going to leave you with one thought: if you didn’t get into school on time because of traffic, and someone said “go to the principal’s office,” would you be happy? Did you deserve that punishment? That’s what happened to the black people. They were simply waiting for their white friend when a policeman arrested them! That’s not the correct thing to do! If I were the police, I wouldn’t do that! Is this the same with you?
