CAMPAIGN

  • Lincoln was nominated because of his views on slavery and improving the national infrastructure.
  • His slogan was "vote yourself a farm."

ELECTION

  • Lincoln was a republican.
  • Year was 1860.
  • Opponents- Stephan Douglas, John C. Breckinridge, and John Bell.
  • Electoral college- 180 of 303 votes.

About Lincoln

  • Family- Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Had an older sister, Sarah, and a younger brother, Thomas.
  • Education- received 18 months of schooling in youth. Taught himself with law books.
  • Work- did a lot of manual labor work until he became interested in politics and was elected to state legislature. Then was admitted to the bar and started working at John T. Stuart law firm.

STATE OF THE UNION.

  • Lincoln's main goal for his first year in presidency was to preserve the union.

EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE

  • Lincoln used executive privilege to suspend the writ of habeas corpus during the civil war.

MINNESOTA VOTE?

  • Minnesota did vote in favor of Lincoln.

FUN FACTS

  • Lincoln wanted women to have the right to vote in 1836.
  • Was a wrestler.
  • Didn't have a middle name.
  • Hated being called Abe, wanted to be called by Lincoln.
  • Had a cat that ate at the White House dinner table, his name was Tabby.
