Copper in human health

  • The adult body contains between 1.4 and 2.1mg of copper per kilograms of body weight.
  • Copper helps your body make red blood cells and keeps nerve cells and your immune system healthy.
  • Copper also helps form collagen, a key part of bones and connective tissue.
  • Copper may also act as an antioxidant, getting rid of free radicals that can damages cells and DNA.

Copper deficiency

  • Very rare, but extremely dangerous
  • Symptoms: Fatigue , Osteoporosis , Paleness , Low body temperature, or always feeling cold , Anemia , Brittle bones

Copper overdose

  • The major sources of excess copper are: Copper water pipes, especially when attached to a water softening system, and Copper IUD's
  • Copper is an example of a heavy metal that's a nutrient at low concentrations but extremely toxic at higher levels
  • Symptoms: Abdominal pain , Vomiting , Yellow skin (jaundice)

copper in children 9-13 years

  • For children 9 to 13 years: 700 mcg daily
  • Children should get copper from foods. DO NOT give copper supplements to children
  • Diagnosis of copper deficiency in children is clear and reliable once the condition is suspected.
  • Most well-nourished children have adequate intakes of copper
