Maurice Sendak

Maurice Sendak is an author and illustrator best known for his children's books, Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen.

Maurice was born to Jewish immigrant parents in Brooklyn, New York on June 10, 1928. He lead a highly successful career as a widely published and celebrated author, illustrator and play/opera costume and set designer until his death in 2012.

A self taught artist and writer, Sendak relied on his wild imagination created by the lack of time spent outside his home as a sick and frail child. At age 12, Walt Disney's Fantasia, further encouraged his love of fantasy and invented characters.

While working as a window dresser at a toy store in the late 1940's, Sendak met book editor Ursula Nordstrom, who helped him get his first illustration jobs and exposed Sendak to the world of children's literature.
