Training
Most gladiators trained in special schools typically owned by private citizens that eventually was taken over by the city to prevent a private army from attacking Rome. One important thing about their training was learning "how to die." Gladiators were actually taken care of during training having medical help and 3 meals a day. It's like staying at a college on a scholarship, but instead of playing a sport you fought till the death.

One Type of Gladiator
Paegniarius-The paegniarius did not engage in serious combat with lethal weapons, but was rather an entertainer who performed gruesome fights during breaks. He had neither a helmet or a shield, but wore protective wrappings on his lower legs and head. He might enjoy a long life: an epitaph for a paegniarius named Secundus boasted that he had lived 99 years, 8 months, and 18 days.
