  • Human Development Index: Nepal ranks among the poorest — 157 out of 187 countries
  • Risk of earthquakes: Nepal ranks 11th in the world for vulnerability to earthquakes.

WHAT HAPPENED?

  • People affected: Approximately 8 million
  • Death toll: At least 7,600 and expected to rise as reports from remote areas increase.
  • People injured: At least 16,300
  • Number of children in urgent need of assistance: Approximately 940,000
  • Number of homes destroyed: At least 284,000
  • Areas affected: 40% of Nepal. 39 out of 75 districts report damage.

HOW THE U.S. IS INVOLVED

  • -USAID has donated over $1 million and has activated Disaster Assistance Response Teams (DART) in Nepal to help the government with recovery. -USAID has also supported disaster risk reduction efforts in Nepal, specifically in the Kathmandu valley, alongside the International Organization of Migration (IOM). -On April 25th, President Obama delivered a speech at the White House informing the American people of the exact damage in Nepal and how the U.S. government is going to help.
