Gravity

THE FORCE THAT GOVERNS MOTION

What is Gravity?

  • Gravity is a force that attracts all objects toward each other

Law of Univeral Gravitation

  • States that every other object in the universe attracts every other object
  • Some factors of gravity are...
  • the mass of objects
  • the distance between objects

Variables in gravity

  • Gravity attracts objects, so some variables would be
  • mass, because the greater the mass, the greater the force
  • distance, because the greater the distance, the less force there is

Newton's 1st law of motion

  • an object at rest will stay at rest
  • an object in motion will stay in motion
  • unless acted upon by an unbalanced force

Gravity + Inertia: role in orbit

  • Inertia- the tendency to resist a change in motion
  • Gravity pulls the objects toward the sun, since it has the greatest mass
  • It also keeps objects from moving in a straight line
  • Inertia keeps the objects moving forward so they do not fall to the sun
