NATURAL LOGS

MACLEAN BOWIE & NATHAN GANTCHEV

THE NATURAL LOG FACTS

  • First studied by Leonhard Euler.
  • Also called Napier's constant, because his work implied natural logs as early as 1614.
  • The letter 'e' being the first letter of his surname is a coincidence.

MORE FACTS

  • Sebastian Wedeniwski calculated the first 869,894,101 numbers of the natural log.
  • The value of e is Approximately 2.718281828459045.
  • Euler proved that 'e' is an irrational number.
  • 'E' is transcendental meaning it isn't a root of an algebraic equation.
  • This was proved by Charles Hermite in 1873.

EVEN MORE FACTS

  • John Napier also published various papers on logarithms in the 1600s.
  • One of Napier's goals in using logarithms was to make the calculations astronomers made easier on them.
