SYMBOLISM

  • The use of symbols (objects) to represent ideas or qualities
  • Synonyms- emblem, representation, connotation
  • Objects that have a deeper relation to the story than a literal meaning

SYMBOLISM

  • In the Iliad a commonly seen symbol is Hector's flashing helmet.
  • It could be known to represent hope, loyalty, and dedication

SYMBOLISM IN PERSEPOLIS

  • Veil; headscarf
  • symbolizes being trapped or controlled and taking away identity
  • Cigarette
  • Symbolizes maturity, rebellion, and a way of getting rid of stress

  • Find a repeated object or one that stands out (describe the symbol)
  • Think of connections to other ideas or larger meanings in the text
  • Make sure to find proof an be able to explain your connections
