Other indicators of development

351-353

Gender-related development index

  • GDI measures the development of people by gender over time (gender equality).
  • The HDI- human development index and the GDI differ in a small amount but enough to be noticed.
  • Each index gives a value anywhere from 0-1

GEM- Gender empowerment measurement

  • Measures to what extent women are able to actively participate in economic and political life.
  • If a country has a low GEM value in relation to its GDl value, this would imply that the access to basic needs, education, and health is not necessarily being translated into greater opportunities and participation for women.

Human Poverty Index

  • collects information from three variables: the length and health of a person's life, education, and standard of living.
  • Compared to GDP, HDI is a more effective measurement that can be used to asses the development of a country, not economic growth

Human Poverty Index (HPI)

  • Opposite from the HDI, HPI measures the the level of deprivation and poverty experienced in a country
  • Indicators include: the percentage of people who do not reach the age of 40, are illiterate, have no access to water, and have children who are underweight for their age.
  • Useful when observing how evenly the benefits of development are spread within a country.
