United States Great Migration
EXAMPLES OF MIGRATION FLOWS
- Russia- people experienced internal migration and moved east from the heartland to the shores of the Pacific.
- Mexico- 1 million Mexicans successfully cross into the US each year (legally and illegally). Mexico is experiencing labor shortage and more people are moving north. They travel to the Southern States such as New Mexico and Arizona.
NATIONAL MIGRATION FLOWS
- A massive migration stream that carried the center of the population west and shifting from he north to the south
- After American civil war milllions of African Americans migrated north for industrial work
- In the 1970s the reverse act occurred with African Americans leaving the north and returning to south
- Causes: living conditions, civil rights act, economic opportunities
Guest Workers

- U.S. Sponsored and helped the guest workers by making the Marshall plan.
- Europe assumed they would eventually leave but they stayed
Guest Workers

- People from North Africa went to France, people from Turkey went to Germany.
