HISTORY

  • The bill & Melinda gates foundation founded the early college high school initiative (echoi) in 2002, along with New York’s Carnegie corporation, the ford foundation, and the w.k Kellogg foundation
  • Most partner with a university, college, or community college

WHY WERE THEY CREATED?

  • These schools make it possible for students who have few opportunities to continue to higher education.

MOTIVATION IS KEY

  • Many early colleges only accept freshman candidates - no late transfer- which is why recruitment starts in middle school
  • Students are required to meet with all their high school demands during the first two years of early college

TOWARDS A COLLEGE DEGREE

  • An innovation way for high school students to earn both a high school degree & a two year associates degree ( or up to 2 years toward a bachelors degree)
  • Are they like vocational schools?
  • Are they like college preparatory schools?
