WHAT IS POLLUTION?

You may hear about pollution in a non-fictional book, at school, on the newspaper, or on the news.

Pollution occurs when trash, garbage, oil, or gas are put into an environment where it shouldn't be. It disturbs the balance of the environment.

TYPES OF POLLUTION

  • Land pollution
  • Air pollution
  • Water pollution
  • Noise pollution
  • Light pollution

LAND POLLUTION...
Is the destruction, of the earth's ground. It is mostly a result of human activity, and waste.

AIR POLLUTION...
Is when unnatural gases are released into the air. Ozone (smog) is one of the most popular forms of air pollution.

WATER POLLUTION...
Is when chemicals, or oils are released into large or semi-large bodies of water.

NOISE POLLUTION...
Is when annoying or harmful amounts of sound are heard. Motorized vehicles, machines, animals.

LIGHT POLLUTION...
Is when excessive or inappropriate amounts of artificial light are shown.
Also known as Light Trespass, light falling where it is not, needed, wanted, or intended.

FUN FACTS

  • Americans generate 30 billion foam cups, 220 million tires, and 1.8 billion disposable diapers every year, according to the Green Schools Alliance.
  • About 7 million premature deaths annually are linked to air pollution, according to WHO. That is one in eight deaths worldwide.
  • About 56 percent of the trash in the United States is put in landfills. Half of landfill space consists of paper.
