GOALS:

  • Discover how your school librarians can support EL/all teachers
  • Explore online resources
We all teach English in some form or fashion because we all have English Learners in our classroom.

I will show a couple of resources that are for all teachers to use with English Learners.

Second Language Acquisition & Learning

So, why not visit your library?

Library Bill of Rights:
Try to connect students with the just right book
Don't limit students on what to read
Don't limit students on how much to read

Free Voluntary Reading

(FVR)
Krashen (2003) makes the claim that Free voluntary reading 'may be the most powerful educational tool in language education'. It serves to increase literacy and to develop vocabulary.

Free voluntary reading results in better reading comprehension, writing style, vocabulary, spelling, and grammatical development.

FVR can take place as a reading center in you classroom.

Book/Reading Promotions

Encourages Free Voluntary Reading
Librarians encourage reading by providing book or reading promotions such as the TX. Bluebonnet Book list or DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time. DEMO: TLA lists

Stephen Krashen, "Teaching vocabulary lists is inefficient - the time is better spent reading alone."

Gomez & Gomez or anyother DL model has DEAR time included as part of their model.

Promoting pleasure reading for ELs

  • Gives ELs option to select books in English or home language
Picture books and graphic novels are reading materials!

DEMO: SORA, & PAC

SORA - dyslexia font
connect to pubic library

PAC - lexile level
language
read alikes
ask librarian to pull books for your small group (menu of books by lexile level)

Book Recommendations

Classroom Libraries
Jobbers have book summaries, interest level, and book reviews. The book reviews are professionally evaluated that is different from Good Reads.

Instructional & Interactive

Read aloud for students
Librarians can reinforce what you're teaching with interactive read alouds:
We use gestures, visuals, chants, puppets, flannel board pieces, props, realia (tangible items) to enhance the story experience.

Stephen Krashen, "Hearing stories has a direct impact on literacy development."

Stories can be heard by read alouds and eAudio books.

Resources

Library Provides:

  • eAudio materials and instructions on how to use them
  • Variety of print & online resources
In Texas we have TexQuest that our state legislature pays for the school districts. TexQuest is like the umbrella that houses databases such as Gale, Britannica, TeachingBooks, and Learn360.

Ask your school librarian what databases are purchased by the district or school for your use.

Demo:
Gale in Context - culture piece
Learning Express - secondary resource (parents can access resource using child's login or the public library - Houston PL) GED, Citizenship test, state assessment exams, military, computer skills courses, build resume, etc...

Dual Language Model

Gomez & Gomez DL model has library and read alouds included in their model.

Bilingual Research Centers
