Strategies to communicate events/activities to parents

General Communication

  • Post information weekly on the school website and all school social media platforms
  • Emails Parents
  • Students will bring home flyers of events
  • If the Principal does a weekly message to parents, the events will be included.

Personalized Communication

  • Teachers pick two families and make a personal connection
  • I can reach out to two other families that have been recommended by teachers
  • Word of mouth: Talk with PTO families and encourage them to invite 5 friends

  • Film the event
  • Live stream the event for families that can’t come
  • One virtual session and one in person event

  • Parents will play math games without staff.

  • Parents will process the game experience and have an opportunity to ask questions.
  • Once complete, they will move to the next game station

Examples

  • Go Fish: fish for pairs that add up to 10. Have student ask: “I have a 2. Do you have an 8 to make 10?” Change aces to 1 for this game and leave face cards out entirely.
  • Make a Buck: logic and problem solving skill are used to discern which cards to keep and which to discard, as well as thinking through possible ways to collect $1.00.

Examples

  • War:Deal two cards, a numerator and denominator, then determine whose fraction is the largest. The winner keeps all four cards, and play continues until the cards are gone.

Community Scavenger Hunt

  • Community location that will be voted on by the school PTA
  • Rainy day location would be Parkville School

Parent Engagement

  • Staff will pick three examples they found in the community and model how to turn what they found into a teachable math experience.
  • Families will walk with their children and do a scavenger hunt.
  • Once all the items have been found, parents will practice using these scavenger hunt items into teachable math experiences
  • Parents will share with the group and process with staff
