Tips for taking math exams
Math exams can be tough. This is especially true in Thai upper high school where the jump in difficulty is quite extreme from the previous year. Here are some tips that might make things a bit easier.

Tip 1:

Prepare
This may seem obvious, but you'd be surprised how many students are not fully prepared for exams. It all begins with participating in class and doing all of the assignments. You are responsible for getting help with topics that are giving you trouble. Ask your teacher anytime instead of waiting until exams come around. If you consider the 1st day of class the beginning of your preparation for exams, you will be ahead of the game. Also, it does not hurt to be well rested before test time. Do not stay up all night cramming!

Tip 2:

Do not panic
Make sure you relax during an exam. Be confident in your preparation, studies, and ability. If you have done your best and asked for help when necessary, you are ready. When you encounter difficulties, ask a question or skip that problem until later. As in any activity, the more relaxed you are, the better you will do.

Tip 3:

Keep things in Perspective
This may help with tip 2, too! This is just one math exam in the hundreds of exams you will take in your life. It is one test in one class. It is not a life or death situation. Try to treat the problems like puzzles that you enjoy instead of math problems that your whole future depends upon (which it does not!).

tip 4:

Manage YOUr time
Sometimes time flies when you might not be having fun! This can be true for math exams which require a lot of concentration. Many exams are time sensitive, so:
- Read all of the problems first.
- Note the point values of the problems and budget your time accordingly.
- Do not get stuck on one problem. Move along and come back later.
- Recall the time saving tips your teacher has taught you.
- Do not spend too much time calculating. Your teacher is more interested in the process than too many calculations. If you find your numbers getting ugly, go back and look for an error instead.
- Check your solutions if you have time at the end.

TIP 5: Stay Organized

This is for your benefit as well as the person who must grade your work. Keep problems together on the same page. Also, make sure your work can be easily followed. Use rulers or graph paper to keep everything lined up and easy to read.

tip 6

show all of your work
It is very important to show all of your work step-by-step. I am more interested in your process than your answer. If you make a small mistake, credit can still be given for the correct methods. The rule is strict: NO WORK = No Points. If your test paper does not have enough space, use the provided extra pages. If you use extra paper, make sure to include the problem number next to your work.

For Better math exam results:

  • Prepare
  • Don't Panic
  • Keep Perspective
  • Manage Your Time
  • Stay Organized
  • And, Show All Work
