Published on Sep 10, 2019

This Deck is a project about a Newsela article I read talking about how studies technology may be increasing teen suicide.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Social Media is increasing teen suicide!

We know social media has both positive and negative effects, and we all have different reactions to the intense feedback. But, how do other people react? Suicide maybe?

Social Media

Social media is shown to have a increase in cyberbullying and teen suicide because of the fact of being left out or not good enough. In social media almost everything is edited to make stuff look more interesting or better looking than the original. It makes things look perfect, like the perfect life. Editing and making things look more dramatic also attracts more clout. "After hours of scrolling through Instagram feeds, I just feel worse about myself because I feel left out," said Caitlin Hearty, a 17-year-old Littleton, Colorado, high school senior. This girl actually helps out other teens because she knows the struggle.

Trust Issues and self confidance is lost ;-;

you can bring it back!
With all the hate, fake people, ¨accidents¨, people start to lose trust in people and lose all hope that they will ever be happy. But you can't blame them for taking a long time to trust you. It just means somebody hurt them really bad and they are scared of that happening to them again. They want reassurance and want to know that you are the person they know they can trust.
People lose self confidence because of social media. There is so many beautiful famous people with the perfect life and you just look like a sack of potatoes. ALL THE PICTURES ARE EDITED!

Illinois Chicago is an example, every sense social media surged, the rate of suicide increased in years 2010-2015 everywhere. Its isn't known to why the rates increased but many have been caused by cyberbullying.
Teens use social media more than 5 hours a day at least and shown that the activities had about 13 million and more teens that were involved.

The dramatic Changes

Social Media started in 1997. The changes in suicide was a little bit, but in 2010 rates went up 30% from 2001. Mostly affecting young females ages 10-14 then went up for every age group. It affected men all ages under 75.
The difference between male and female rates I´d that men have a higher rate of suicide. I can sort of understand why the girls do it but I can understand why the men do it(because I am not a man). One of the causes I know is because of their relationship.
The CDC made teens take a test questioning them about how they feel and the attempts they have made, about 18 million teens were involved.

The Main causes of suicide are; Cyber Bullying and Verbal Bullying. Cyber Bullying is very trendy nowadays but people know how to deal with it and there is more ways to help. It usually starts by the gossip, people make rumors about you and tell the WHOLE school but you, then there is the messaging. You are receiving many messages from people and they are saying very rude things about you until a point where they usually say ¨Die ¨. Verbal bulling kinda starts the same way like cyber bulling, the rumors. But instead of messages there is notes calling you horrible names.

Is all hope lost?

help is everywhere
Everyone goes through depression and suicide thoughts. Its a normal thing in life so there is no reason for you to feel left out from other people because if you just talk to them then they might understand what you are going through, they will also try to help you out.

BUT WAIT!

Nowadays, there is a lot of help lines that really want to help other people from depression and stop them from self harming and/or suicide. (Crisis HotLine is an example).

My Opinion

I like doing this type of research because I want to know the reason for self harm or suicide. Many people say it's because of hate/cyberbullying, but if someone says hateful things about you online. Why take your own life? Those people can't harm you physically through a screen so why care at all? They are entitled to their own opinion but you don't have to give any care to it if you don't want to. And if there is every PHYSICAL bullying, some of the best choices would be to tell an adult but you should also fight back and not let other people harm you.
