HOW DO JELLYFISH GLOW?

OUR HYPOTHESIS

• Our hypothesis, was that their tentacles set off light when they move.

JELLYFISH

• Jellyfish, are really cool creatures and they are mostly made of water and protein.
• They live for less than a year and eat small plants.
• Not all jellyfish have tentacles though, and not all jellyfish glow

HOW DO THEY GLOW?

• The natural glow, of jellyfish, and other creatures, are called bioluminescence
• Some jellyfish use phosphorescence. Phosphorescene is the process where energy is absorbed and slowly released in a form of light. Lots of jellyfish also have bioluminescent organs

WHY DO THEY GLOW?

• Jellyfish glow when predators are attracted to them, so that they have a chance to escape.
• They also glow, to attract prey.

FACTS

• The light of some jellyfish can be seen from 100 meters away.
• Scientists have estimated that up to 90% of the deep sea creatures produce bioluminescence.
• The light of bioluminescence is usually blue or green.

CONCLUSION

• In conclusion our hypothesis was incorrect, because they glow due to bioluminescence and not their movement
