The story of Chris McCandless

Taking off

  • After Chris graduated college, he decided to go out on his own.
  • He wasn't very close to his family, except for his sister and dog.
  • He took his 1982 Datsun out to California from Atlanta.
  • He traveled remotely light, little cash, clothes, and food.

lake mead

  • Chris couldn't get his car to start after a flood killed it
  • He left the car and some belongings at Lake Mead
  • He took off on foot from there

Gulf of California

  • Chris bought a canoe in Arizona
  • He wanted to paddle to the Gulf of California
  • He got stuck in canals in Mexico
  • Duck hunters helped him get to the Gulf

Bullhead City

  • Chris settled in Bullhead City for a while
  • He got a job at McDonalds
  • He traveled to the Slabs to help a friend at a swap meet
  • He wouldn't accept most offerings from people, even clothes

Salton City

  • Chris came to Salton City, a desert like town 
  • He met Ronald Franz
  • The two became very close
  • Ron asked to adopt Chris as his grandson

Alaska

  • Chris arrived in Alaska in April 1992
  • He learned more about the forest before going into it
  • He found an abandon bus, and made camp there
  • He killed animals and collected berries for food

End of the road

  • McCandless lived over 100 days in the wild
  • He lived a happy life
  • He wrote about all of his accomplishments in a journal
  • His final moment was taking a happy picture 
  • He died of starvation inside of the bus

Friends of Chris

  • Chris made lots of friends along the way
  • Wayne Westburg, a farmer from South Dakota
  • Ronald Franz, an old man from Salton City
  • Jan and Bob Burres, a couple who sold Knick-Knacks at flea markets

Actions

  • Chris made some risky decisions
  • Chris died because he wasn't all that prepared for Alaska
  • He made a poor choice not taking much money with him

My opinion

  • I think Chris was a good man
  • I bet he regrets not telling his family goodbye 
  • He deserves some honor for accomplishing what he did
